Walking Toward The Light  ...  Lessons In Discipleship
John 14: 5
I.  THE SECOND PERSON OF THE TRINITY

The Son of God:

Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity ... God the Son.  God the Father called Jesus
His Son.  Hundreds of years before Jesus came to earth, the Father told us that He would be
coming, and that He would be called out of Egypt.  On the day Jesus was baptized by John
the Baptist, the Father spoke from Heaven saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am
well pleased." He spoke a second time when Jesus was on the Mount of Transfiguration ...
declaring that Jesus is His beloved Son.  (When God speaks, we should take heed.  When
He speaks more than once, it would be foolish not to listen!!)

Angels knew that Jesus is the Son of God.  An angel spoke to Mary, Jesus' mother, telling
her that the child she would bear would be known as the Son of God.  Even the demons
(fallen angels) knew (and still do!) that Jesus is the Son of God.  They believe ... and they
shudder!

The disciples of Jesus Christ recognized Him as the Son of God.  Jesus had power over the
weather.  And when He calmed the storm, His disciples acknowledged Him as God's Son.

And finally, Jesus Himself said He is the Son of God.

The Son of Man:

Jesus was flesh and blood.  He was "found in fashion as a man."  Jesus was not only the
Son of God, but was also called the Son of Man.  Jesus called Himself the Son of Man ... no
less than 80 times in the Gospels.  He was recognized as the Son of Man by His disciples, as
well.  Finally, John the Revelator also called Jesus the Son of Man.

Jesus was fully God and fully man.  He had the full nature of both.
II.  Jesus' Life On Earth

Birth and early years:

We do not know the exact date of Jesus' birth.  Some scholars believe that it was in the
spring.  But the one thing we do know is that it was not December 25.

Jesus was born of a virgin, in Bethlehem, in a stable.  An angel came to Mary and told her
that she found favor before God, and she would conceive a Son whose name would be
called Jesus.   The angel was also sent to Joseph, Mary's husband-to-be, informing him that
the Child she would bear was conceived by the Holy Spirit.  His ancestry was of the line of
King David.

Jesus had great wisdom and understanding, even at a young age.  At twelve years old, He
was found in the temple listening and learning ... and amazing even the teachers with His
wisdom.

Jesus' baptism and temptation:

It is known that Jesus was about 30 years old when He was baptized by John the Baptist.
Immediately following His Baptism, the Holy Spirit came down from Heaven as a dove, and
God spoke about His Son.  Jesus was then led into the desert for forty days, to be tempted
by the devil.  Satan tempted Jesus using God's Word.  "If you are the Son of God ..." He
taunts us even today with those very same words ... "If you are ..." (a Christian ... you [or
they] wouldn't do or say or think the way you [they] do).  He knows God's Word, but he twists
it and turns it just enough to bring temptation, trial or trauma.  But Jesus countered Satan's
attacks with the truth of God's Word.  And so can we!!  It's important to know truth.  Know
truth, and a lie stands out like a sore thumb!

Jesus' Ministry:

Jesus chose His disciples ... those who would follow Him, learn from Him and minister with
Him ... those to whom He could entrust His power when He was to leave this earth.  His
ministry consisted of teaching, preaching the gospel, healing and deliverance.  People were
amazed at His teaching because He taught with an authority that they had never heard
before.  Jesus did so many miracles that they could not all be written down.  He was able to
accomplish so much because He spent so many hours in prayer with the Father.  He was
strengthened and guided by those times of prayer.  So it can be for us as well.  And Jesus
gave us the understanding of just how to pray.

Jesus' death, burial, resurrection and ascension:

Jesus came to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray that night.  He knew what was coming ...
this was to be the night He would be betrayed by one of His very own disciples, Judas, and
He would be led away to be killed.  During His prayer, Jesus was so distraught and in such
agony, that He sweat great drops of blood.  He was taken into custody there, and taken to
the palace.  He was not only betrayed by Judas, but He was also betrayed by His people.  He
was beaten to within an inch of His life, spit upon, mocked and ridiculed.  He was then taken
to be crucified on a cross.  (Crucifixion on a cross was one of the most painful, torturous
and humiliating forms of death known to man at that time.)  Jesus was then buried in a tomb
.
Three days later, by the power of God Almighty through His Holy Spirit, Jesus was RAISED
FROM THE DEAD!!!  He was seen by many after that time, until the day He ascended to
Heaven through the clouds.  So it was, and so it shall be that He returns the same way!
Victory over death was His, and it is ours through Him as well.  He will be back ... and when
He comes, He will be coming after His children to take us to Heaven with Him, where we
will live for all eternity!  Amen ... and amen!!
III. What Jesus Is

Jesus is:     GOD
             CHRIST
             LORD
             MESSIAH
             MASTER
             ANOINTED ONE
             KING
             SAVIOR
             CREATOR OF ALL THINGS
             MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MAN
             INTERCESSOR
KNOW JESUS!!!

Knowing "about" Jesus Christ isn't the same thing as
knowing HIM.  Jesus chastised the Pharisees (religious
leaders of the time) because they refused to come to Him.
They searched and knew the Scriptures, and believed that in
them, they would find eternal life.  But they refused to come
to Jesus ... the very Giver of eternal life!!

KNOW JESUS ... COME TO HIM!!
